“Many that live deserve death. And some die that deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then be not too eager to deal out death in the name of justice, fearing for your own safety. Even the wise cannot see all ends,” said Gandalf to Frodo Baggins. Was the execution of Saddam Hussein a right thing to do? In this essay, I will try to think about the death penalty.
Do we have the right to take someone’s life? Cons: You can not take their life and it doesn’t help the victims any more. And misjudgments happen.
Pros: Why should we pay for the jailing of the damn criminal? Is his/her right of life higher than the right of his/her victims? With the DNA-tests it is impossible to misjudge.
I think that — in very special cases — we have the right to execute serious criminals. I would strongly disagree when people who killed once should be executed. But I think that the serious murderers should be executed. We have many examples of people like that. The likes of Slobodan Milosevic, Josef Mengele, Timothy McVeigh or most recently Saddam Hussein should have been sentenced to death. There is no doubt whatsoever.
These are the unquestionable cases. When these criminals are executed, people feel justice was done. Especially Saddam Hussein and his fellow Iraqi officers who have killed thousands of innocent people lost their rights to live.
And there’s also the point of a capital punishment. If you are sentenced for life, is there any reason for you to behave like a normal being? To behave well? No, there’s no such reason. I don’t know any statistics on how many people the already sentenced murderers kill but I think that for so dangerous people there should always be a threat.
The executions should be done in a human way, if possible. No inhuman things like electrical chairs or even guns. The best way, to my eyes, is the injection. And without any audience. It’s not a football match.
So I’ve just written the arguments why I think the death penalties are not inappropriate for multiple murderers like the dictators all over the world are. As Gandalf said, we should not be too eager to decide who should hang. But after a serious consideration, I think the society has the right to cut someone’s rights.
